We Are Black Environmental Initiative

The Black Environmental Initiative (BEI) began in 2019 as a volunteer-led network founded by Naolo Charles, bringing together dozens of committed volunteers across Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa. We have since grown to a large network of environmentalists in US and Canada, promoting black-led environmental engagement and protection for communities. Since 2019, we have led successful environmental initiatives in black and marginalized communities with a focus on three areas:

Land & Nature
We reconnect Black people to nature while expanding canopy cover, restoring soil and water, and conserving land away from corporate exploitation.
Climate Change
We monitor and reduce exposure to pollution across air, water, soil, and indoor environments and prepare communities for the impacts of climate change.
Green Jobs
We train and place Black youth and workers not only in green construction but also in climate science, environmental policy, and nature-based work.
Policy Protection
We advance environmental protection through policy and legal work that helps dismantle climate and environmental racism.
Community Energy
We create community-owned renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions that also generate training and jobs.
Eco-Tourism
We organize international programs that reconnect Black people with land, culture, and nature for social change.
